The Mouse Bride

We should go to bed early on the third day of the Lunar New Year. Why is that, you ask? You see, the mouse bride is getting married tonight, and it's bad luck to disturb her special day. So let's all tuck in early, and I'll tell you the story of the beautiful mouse bride.

老鼠娶亲 lǎo shǔ qǔ qīn

(The Rat Gets Married)

Once upon a time, a little mouse lived in a dark cave with his wife and their lovely daughter. She had just reached the ideal age for marriage, and her parents set out to find a worthy husband for her.

As they stepped out of the cave, they noticed the bright sun shining in the sky. The mouse thought the sun would be a perfect match for his daughter, so he went up to him and said, "Hey, Mr. Sun, you light up the whole world. Will you marry my daughter?"

But the sun shook his head and replied, "Thank you, little mouse, but the cloud can take away my power any minute. He has more power than I do."

So the mouse went to the cloud and asked him to marry his daughter. The cloud laughed and said, "I may be powerful, but I am nothing once the wind starts to blow."

The mice then went to the wind and begged him to marry their daughter, but he said, "I may be strong, but a brick wall can stop me in my tracks."

The mice then went to the brick wall and asked him to marry their daughter, but he shivered and said, "No, no, no, mice are my biggest fear. Stay away from me!"

The mice realized they were more powerful than the wall, so they wondered what to do. Then they remembered what their elders had always warned them about – cats!

The mice went to the cat and begged him to marry their daughter. The cat was flattered and agreed to their proposal. So they prepared a lavish dowry and accompanied their daughter to the groom's home on the wedding day.

But when they arrived, the cat was nowhere to be found. They waited and waited until a sharp meow broke the silence. The cat leaped out from behind and devoured the mouse bride. "Yum," the cat thought. "That was a delicious wedding feast."

That's the end of the story, and it's a sad one. You see, the mouse bride's wedding is a cautionary tale that reminds us to respect tradition and not tempt fate. So remember, it's best not to interfere with the wedding, or you might bring bad luck on yourself for the whole year. Now let's all go to bed early, and sweet dreams!
